6 ways cybersecurity goes beyond the tech

Hey there,

Cybersecurity is often looked at as a technical field. It certainly has a lot of technical elements to it, but that's like the tip of the iceberg. Working in cybersecurity has a lot of people and process parts to it. You're supporting "the business" and a bigger mission.

When you're in the CISO role, you will struggle mightily if you focus too much on technology or try to solve every problem with technology.

You're there to partner and collaborate with your peers. To enable them. To make sure that cybersecurity is supporting the broader organization's roadmap.

That's what this week's article is all about. We're covering 6 ways that the CISO role goes beyond the technology and why you should embrace each of them to become a more effective leader.

Failure is often looked at as a negative thing in our personal and professional lives. This week, take some time to reflect on a recent failure of yours. Be honest with yourself. It could be something that didn't go as well as you wanted it to.

Our egos and self-affirmation bias have a tendency to smooth over any stumbles in our memory. If you can, lean on any writing or data you have to support this failure or setback.

Set aside a solid 30 minutes and reflect on the situation. Asking yourself a couple of key questions:

  • Why did that happen? The 5 why's is a really useful framework here.
  • What will I do differently moving forward?

That's it. You don't need to overthink this. The most important thing is that you continue to adapt and grow. Otherwise, what was it all for?

Keep growing,

- Rob & Frank
